Guessing Game 2! (Discussion)

oLahav saidTue, 21 Oct 2008 13:53:14 -0000 ( Link )

If you haven’t been able to play the first guessing game we’re starting over in a new place (to eliminate long loads and scroll downs).

I’m going to get us going… this character is actually from a book this time (although there was a movie based on it). It’s not a series of books either. Enough hints- you can start asking questions or guessing any time.

No, it’s not David Copperfield (although that was a pretty good book… I liked it much better than Oliver Twist for example). And the book doesn’t follow the character from childhood.

    Ok, that’s fair… let’s see…

The movie based on the book was pretty bad. There are diamonds involved. Also a gun is heavily used for symbolism. Does that help?

I’ll give an actor- Laurence Olivier. Hopefully that doesn’t make it too easy.

Yes! I think you’ve got it.

I don’t like Dustin Hoffman to be honest. His acting style irritates me, so I was quite annoyed to find out he was cast in this adaptation. The script wasn’t done well either…

Well, you’re not going to believe this but I actually looked at all the movies Olivier played in and something clicked with the diamonds business.

I did read the book “Marathon Man” a long long time ago – and liked it, though I don’t remember much…but I did not see the movie.

    good choice!

Ok, my turn to post a question.

This character is from a book. They made a movie on it and the hero rose to cult status. The plot deals with a number of yuppie protagonists.

    Your guesses now!

HAL 9000 is the chief antagonist in Arthur C. Clarke’s “2001: A Space Odyssey”.

My turn: I’m based on a real life character. I was featured in a movie.

    AWESOME!

Usually I would have no idea, but recently a friend posted a blog article about how to make your very own paper HAL 9000

HAL is most well known as the computer villain of Kubrick’s Space Odyssey. Basically, it’s a computer that can think, and has a creepy glowing red camera and super creepy voice. You can learn a bit more about HAL here and check out a clip of HAL from 2001: a Space Odyssey here (but yanno, spoiler alert and all)

Male, multiple books but not a series, blend of genres but none superheroish.

Additional hint: In the most recent “version” of my death, I commit suicide by drinking a mixture of a product composed of sodium nitrate, sodium hydroxide, aluminum, and sodium chloride. The reason is poilitical.

If you still don’t get it, I’ll drop a really obvious hint.
