Worst book you've ever read? (Discussion)

lucyinthesky saidWed, 05 Nov 2008 00:22:10 -0000 ( Link )

What’s the worst book you’ve ever read, or was simply so boring that you could not continue reading it?

In high school, I tried to read Catch-22 but I couldn’t get into it. It was just so confusing for you and I didn’t find it that funny. Maybe I’ll have to give it another chance.

A friend gave me the book “A History of Love” (or something like it) swearing it’s a wonderfull book and I found it terrible! Horrible characters and virtually no plot! But I couldn’t very well stop nor could I tell her I hated it so I just pretended. Funny thing is I gave her a favourite of mine and she trashed it..

I also didn’t like “The History of the Dead” (again not sure about the title) where eveybody just dies, the end.

Atonment is another one I possitively couldn’t finish movie and all

I’ve decided that if I don’t like-I don’t read but maybe I go overboard with that-I started readind “Dante’s club”, didn’t like the first page and stopped.

By the way I couldn’t read Catch 22 either!

I haven’t tried reading any of the books you’ve mentioned (or if I did I can’t remember them by title at least). But Catcher in the Rye comes to mind as a book I read and hated… I didn’t stop in the middle though.

I’ve also recently tried reading the Choirboys, and couldn’t get through it. It was terrible. Don’t read it unless you like annoying characters and no plot.

I don’t know this book “Choirboys” but I absolutely agree with you on the Catcher. I guess there’s something in it that I miss – otherwise how to explain its popularity?

I think Catcher plays to a certain type of people… those who are like Holden, who like to see themselves as “enlightened” and “better” the rest of our “fake” society.

Personally, I’m proud to be “fake”, as Holden would put it. I fit in, and I enjoy it, so what’s wrong with that?

@lucyinthesky: do give Catch 22 another chance. It’s worth more than that.

The worst book that I read was “The World According to Garp” (John Irving). The movie was not so bad though.

The worst book I ever read was “The Dark Tower” by Stephen King. Or maybe “Dreamcatcher” by Stephen King.

    I hate Stephen King

@TV: The World according to Garp is Kohli’s favorite book :)

Well if you don’t confine the discussion to books, then the worst collection of words I’ve ever read is a discussion on “The Worst book you’ve ever read” that featured both “Catch-22” and “Catcher in the Rye” among the first three entries!

@avicster: I personally believe that the people who professed such dislike for them modern classics are just trying to instigate a lively discussion. Seriously, they seem to be this site’s mods or something

    @avicster – I agree. :)

“The Alchemist” is probably the worst book I have read. Oh yes, I did go insane reading Erich Fromm’s “Fear of Freedom”, too. Although, that was ages back in college, I should not even think of giving it a try again.

I found the Alchemist a bit overrated too, to be honest. I didn’t terribly dislike it though, it was alright.

avicster- I don’t entirely agree with your commentary of the Catcher. I really dislike that book, and I’m as far off from sunny as you can imagine. I have to say though- I can appreciate some of the themes and symbolism in that book. It’s the character of Holden I can’t stand. The rest is perfectly fine.

I love reading mystery novels like the Hercule Poirot series(Agatha Christie), Dan Brown’s thrilling novels etc.
