I now live 2 minutes away from a library and I would love to put that proximity to use. I’m looking for some reading suggestions, if you’ve read anything lately, or you have a book you read a while back and really enjoyed it I’d love to know!

So far on the suggested list I have:

  • Lullabies for Little Criminals
  • The Life of Pi
  • The Poisonwood Bible
  • The Tipping Point

And I just picked up the Corrections, so we’ll see how that goes.

Got any more suggestions? Favourites? Hope you can share!

gee… here I thought that Lullabies for Little Criminals was going to be like a Jon Scieszka tale… but no!

@acrosstheuniverse – I read Lullabies for Little Criminals when I was on vacation in April and it was great! Not the kind of book I might have normally chosen myself (I ran out of reading and stole my sister’s book when she was done reading it) but I really enjoyed it in the end. So dark…so depressing and hopeless at times…but so beautifully written!

I love it when I find a great book that I wouldn’t have normally picked up.

@hcraig and albrecht – great to hear it! Yes, I’ve heard it’s rather dark but then again those are the types of books you just can’t put down!

Life of Pi was a weird book, in a certain way. The ending was a bit odd, but if you’re into symbolism and things like that, it’s not a bad read at all.

I haven’t read any of the others on your suggestion list… but I’m sure you’ll enjoy them all.

I just started reading the old House at Pooh Corner. I realized I never actually read the thing as a kid, so it’s time to make up for it. I don’t know what I’ll read afterwards, but I’m sure I’ll find something.

I do enjoy symbolism in books. It’s interesting to find something to read that makes you think about it after you put the book down. Or in some cases, books that you don’t want to put down!

I’ve been reading nonstop this summer. So far I’ve really enjoyed “The Godfather” by Mario Puzo. I don’t know what it is about this book, it’s just good. I didn’t think I would like it and I’ve never seen the movies but totallly loved it. I’ve also almost finished LAMB by Christopher Moore and I would definitely classify it as a humourous and entertaining summer read.

I’m very excited to read LAMB I’ve heard good things. Also Eat, Pray, Love (is it?) has been on my list. Anyone know of any great used book stores around Toronto? Does anyone have some great places they get books from in their hometown?

After going on a book store search with a friend this weekend I have a few more books to add to the list. The summer is winding to a close soon, so I’ll have to get this reading in quick!

  • Ecoholic (by NOW Columnist Adria Vasil)
  • Green Chic (Christie Matheson)
  • The End of Food (Thomas Pawlick)
  • Eat, Pray, Love (Elizabeth Gilbert)
  • The Glass Castle (Jeannette Walls)

Life of Pi is a lovely book – I kinda liked it.

By the way, Vernon God Little is awesome – a laugh riot (if you dont have a filter for weird humor, that is).

In case you are into symbolism, etc, then I would suggest ‘A 100 years of solitude’ (Gabriel Garcia Marquez) and in case you want something heavy then, “The Name of the Rose’ – Umberto Eco
